Confined space – 1 day

To give participants an understanding of work in small enclosed spaces, including evacuation of a colleague in a harness, using lanyards, safety lines or fall-arrest blocks. Participants must understand how to select suitable equipment for themselves for lowering and hauling up, and be able to use it correctly under supervision. Participants learn how to use detection equipment and how to use escape respirators.

OBJECTIVES

  • Understanding of confined spaces and the risks that may be involved.
  • Understanding the risks and minimising them.
  • Ability to carry out evacuation and begin rescue of a colleague using the correct rescue equipment.
  • Ability to select suitable safety equipment for entering confined spaces and to use the equipment correctly.
  • Ability to detect respiratory poisons in confined spaces.
  • Knowing how to use an escape respirator.
