GWO Basic Safety Training
– Working at Heights & Manual Handling
(combined)
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to enable participants to use basic personal protective equipment (PPE), perform work at heights safely, and conduct comprehensive basic rescues from heights effectively—specifically in a wind turbine-like environment—in accordance with the BST module “Working at Heights” as well as “Manual Handling.”
Overall, the course provides participants with fundamental knowledge and skills that allow them to work safely within the wind energy industry. Thus, it meets the requirements for new employees in the wind industry regarding emergency response.
Target Audience
The course is designed for employees working both onshore and offshore in the wind turbine sector.
Objectives
Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises—aligned with GWO first aid training—the course ensures that participants are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with working at heights, particularly at a WTG.
- Understand the applicable national legislation concerning work at heights.
- Properly identify PPE, including recognizing European/global standard markings on items such as harnesses, safety helmets, safety lines, etc.
- Show knowledge and skills necessary for correctly inspecting, servicing, storing, and packing relevant PPE, harnesses, slings, fall arresters, and positioning equipment.
- Demonstrate proper use of relevant PPE such as harnesses, support straps, fall arresters, and positioning equipment. This includes correct identification of anchor points and appropriate behavior on ladders.
- Properly evacuate equipment.
- Demonstrate how to resolve rescue situations in a wind turbine generator (WTG) and how to effectively use rescue equipment.
- Show an understanding of the importance of performing tasks in a safe and sensible manner in accordance with the legal requirements for the geographical area where the participant operates.
- Identify aspects of job tasks that may increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal injuries.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe practices in manual handling, including proper handling of equipment.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques and be familiar with reporting methods.
- Provide suggestions for problem-solving regarding manual handling in a wind turbine environment.
Catering
