GWO Basic Safety Training
– Manual Handling Refresher
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to refresh the participant’s knowledge, ensuring they remain capable of performing manual handling tasks. The course enables employees in the wind turbine industry to conduct manual handling activities safely, in accordance with the BST module “Manual Handling.”
Overall, the course provides participants with fundamental knowledge and skills that allow them to work safely within the wind turbine industry.
Target Audience
This course is designed for employees who work both onshore and offshore in the wind energy sector.
Objectives
Through both theoretical instruction and practical exercises—aligned with GWO first aid training—the course ensures that participants are able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of conducting tasks safely and sensibly, in compliance with legal requirements relevant to their operational geographic area.
- Identify and explain the normal function of the human body, typical signs, functions, and symptoms associated with both serious injuries and minor injuries, as well as illnesses.
- Exhibit an understanding of safe practices in manual handling, including proper equipment handling techniques.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques and understand reporting methods.
- Propose solutions for issues encountered during manual handling in a wind turbine environment.

Assessment
Ongoing assessment through questioning techniques during the theoretical portion. Participants must satisfactorily complete all exercises, which will be documented on a Performance Assessment Form.
A certificate will be issued upon completion of the training, along with reporting to WINDA.
Notes
- Prior to attendance, participants must be registered in WINDA’s database.
- This basic safety training consists of physically demanding activities which may be potentially stressful; therefore, all participants must be healthy and fit to complete the entire program.
- It is a prerequisite for participation that each participant completes a valid health declaration according to GWO guidelines.
- Maximum personal weight including work attire is 136 kg., according to equipment specifications.
- A valid GWO Manual Handling certificate that has not yet expired is required.
