GWO Basic Safety Training
– Working at Heights
Purpose
The objective of this course is to equip participants with the ability to utilize basic personal protective equipment (PPE), perform work at heights safely, and conduct comprehensive basic rescue operations from heights in a wind turbine-like environment, in accordance with the BST module “Working at Heights.”
Overall, the course provides participants with fundamental knowledge and skills that enable them to work safely within the wind energy sector. Thus, it meets the requirements for new employees in the wind industry regarding emergency response.
Target Audience
This course is designed for personnel working both onshore and offshore in the wind energy sector.
Objectives
Through both theoretical instruction and practical exercises—in alignment with GWO first aid training—the course ensures that participants are capable of:
- Demonstrating knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with working at heights, specifically related to a wind turbine generator (WTG).
- Understanding applicable national legislation concerning work at heights.
- Correctly identifying PPE, including recognizing European/global standard markings on items such as harnesses, safety helmets, safety lines, etc.
- Exhibiting knowledge and skills necessary for properly inspecting, servicing, storing, and packing relevant PPE such as harnesses, support straps, fall arresters, and positioning equipment.
- Demonstrating correct usage of relevant PPE including harnesses, support straps, fall arresters, and positioning equipment. This includes proper identification of anchor points and appropriate behavior on ladders.
- Correctly utilizing evacuation equipment.
- Showing how to resolve rescue situations within a WTG and effectively using rescue equipment.

Assessment
Continuous assessment through questioning techniques during the theoretical part. Participants must complete all exercises satisfactorily as documented on a Performance Assessment Form.
We issue certificates upon completion of training along with reporting to WINDA.
Notes
- Prior to attendance, participants must be registered in WINDA’s database.
- This basic safety training consists of physically demanding activities that may be potentially stressful. Therefore, all participants must be healthy and fit to complete the entire program.
- It is a prerequisite for participation that attendees submit a valid health declaration according to GWO guidelines.
- The maximum person weight inclusive of work clothing is 136 kg., according to equipment specifications.
